The Library

These are mostly titles that I have read in the past few years.

I plead guilty to being mostly history and philosophy, but there is variety.  I select them completely on what sounds interesting to me at the time.

Beowulf

I came to Beowulf mostly because of its reputation — one of those works you feel you should finally read. First written around the 8th century and rediscovered in the 19th, it was praised for its grandeur and its view of an earlier world. What struck me is how distant it still feels in modern English. I include it here because of its importance, even if it isn’t, for me, great reading in translation.

“I do not write my book for the public; I write it for myself.”

Michel de Montaigne
